Wood Chuck July 25th

Beautiful morning with lots of going on – this is the start of excursions for us!

After a breakfast in the dining hall of pancakes and bacon – fruit bar and cereal line both hot and cold, the following groups loaded into vans and took off for parts of New Hampshire and Maine.

Friars and Bards out for four days coming back Thursday night – headed to Western Mass and the Basketball Hall of Fame. Then the bards took off on their own to Hampton Beach (along New Hampshire’s sea coast). Both groups will be camping out tonight and cooking dinner.

The Arrows and Lancers were next to leave with the girls heading to Canobie Amusement and Water Park. The boys were off to an afternoon of paintball!! Both groups are camping and cooking out but in separate camp grounds, both three day excursions.

The Saxons and Scribes took off for Rock Harbor Beach on the Cape for an afternoon of sun and surf. They will be spending three days on the Cape and staying in separate hotels, not camping out. They will also be eating out at local restaurants on the Cape.

Now back in camp for those of us left, with only half the camp, have had lots of activities to choose from. It was a hot day and water front activities were in popular demand by all, from water ski area to canoe and kayak – sailing areas and swimming in between. Top side A&C, woodshop, tennis, riflery and archery led the choices.

These were all divided up between Archers, Bows, Squires, Jesters, Tumblers, TPJs, Foresters, Shires, Yeomen and Quills. These excursions leave later in the week. Some going out Thursday and some Friday.

The Foresters and some Lancers had an afternoon soccer game with Camp Toko and some groups watched the game and cheered them on.

All meals today we ate and drank lots of water!!!

We’ll keep you up to date on excursions and what is going on at camp!

An Evening Note from the Infirmary

Camp is the best place to be in the summer but along with the
joys of running around the beautiful New England landscape also
comes bug bites, allergies, colds, and the occasional physical
injury. We always hope that everyone stays happy and healthy
but in the event a camper becomes ill or injures themselves the
infirmary staff is there to help get them back on their feet and
having the most amazing summer of their lives. The infirm is
staffed all summer by trained medical staff that are prepared for
any situation. We offer clinics after meals where campers can visit
the infirm if they feel ill or rundown. They are seen by our staff
and proper treatment given. We are also very fortunate to have a
certified athletic trainer on call to help us assess physical injuries.

Aside from emergencies and clinics the infirm checks in periodically with campers to make sure they are drinking plenty of water, wearing bug spray and sunscreen. We feel it is very important to promote general health and wellness here at Camp Robin Hood.

A Place Called Freedom

Traditions ….

We are all about history and traditions here at the Realm… For 89 summers children have escaped the cities and the pressure of the school year to a place called Freedom.

Today was filled with old traditions and new challenges for all our campers. A few HIGHLIGHTS-

This morning I challenged the Tumblers and TPJ’s to race up Green Mountain. We have opened the summer with this trip since the 70’s. Our littlest campers – some 50 strong – enjoyed the attention and the day spent with their personal sherpas, our oldest campers the Saxons and Scribes. I promised the winners ice cream and I can report that the girls beat the boys by 2 minutes! The girls however had 1/10 of a mile less to hike as they went up a different trail. We called it a tie and let both groups enjoy the homemade ice cream together. I can also report that the kids were so happy and proud of what they accomplished.

We also finished our 16 laps today at the waterfront – that swim test has been around for over 50 years. Today we were visited by an alumnus who was last at camp 51 years ago. His wife was so happy to finally put a face on the place after 40 years of stories. He told me in spite of all the new buildings the place feels the same. He said we have the trees, the pine needles and the greatest waterfront in the world. He remembered swimming his 16 laps years ago.

As we have done for many years the boys and girls had the first campfires of the season tonight. Boys camp has the Saxons and TPJ’s building the fire and introducing each other to the entire camp after spending the day hiking. Girls camp has a great tradition also – the scribes visit every bunk while linking arms. The girls join the parade while singing “If I had a Hammer” finishing the long walk at waterfront. It was a amazing sight as the new campers already 3 days into their first summer smiled and took in the special moment.

We are so lucky to spend our summers together at the Realm as tens of thousands of others have done before us. DC and I feel like Peter Pan every day. We have been blessed with the privilege of being the sherpas for all your kids. Thank you so much for sharing them with us.

Sweet dreams from the Realm,

Woody

327

327: That was the number torn down in the dining hall in front of hundreds of screaming campers, overjoyed that the countdown since August 13, 2015 is officially over. We all know that every day in The Realm is beautiful, but today was exceptional. The sun shone down upon our campers as they ran into each other’s arms, caught up with old friends, made new friends, and marched into the dining hall hand in hand for dinner. We had the privilege of celebrating our first camp birthdays, accompanied by the parade around the dining hall and the Camp Robin Hood birthday song. This is a tradition I can remember from my first summer as a Tumbler of 1998. Robin Hood has always been steeped in tradition, and it’s amazing how whether it’s 327 days later or years later, we get such comfort from these traditions. 89: That is the number of summers that children have experienced the magic in the trees. We cannot wait for our first full day tomorrow.

Sweet dreams from The Realm,
Emily

How Attending Summer Camp Better Prepares Children For College

Did you know that attending summer camp might prepare you better for college? A recent article on NBC News mentions that children who attended sleepaway camp learn valuable life skills and lessons not gained through studying. We are thrilled to be teaching important lessons at The Realm that will help children throughout their lives.

10393865_10153425643089836_2228166045174318543_nA summer at Camp Robin Hood may not help you ace your college calculus class, but experts say being away from home when you’re younger can help you ease into college life. Students who attended sleepaway camp have experience at a younger age with leaving home for the first time, resolving roommate conflicts, problem solving in class group projects and apt at living with students of diverse background.

Though summer camp experiences don’t often make it onto college applications, college admissions counselor Sara Harberson of Admissions Revolution believes they could still serve applicants well.

“The memories and lessons students have from summer camp will imbue them with a genuineness and adaptability which may come through in unpredictable ways in their essays, letters of recommendation, and interviews,” Harberson said. “Most importantly, their approach to the college process and their choices about how to spend their remaining summers are usually quite thoughtful, because they have a taste of what it means to be happy with their surroundings. That might make going to camp as a younger child priceless in the end.”

A summer at Camp Robin Hood is full of wonderful experiences that help children develop confidence while creating lifelong memories and friendships.
